in their own words

about the project

in their own words is a project examining the relationship between art objects and the words often used to describe these objects. Nine established contemporary artists, each working in a different medium, were invited to describe one of their works and submit both the work and the description for inclusion in an exhibition. In a reversal of the typical gallery experience, the artists’ words were displayed in the exhibition in lieu of their works.

Nine poets were then invited to produce a poem as a response to one of the artists’ works and nine jewellers were invited to produce a piece of work responding to the artists’ words. Neither poets nor jewellers knew the identity of any of the artists and they were given no additional information about the artist or the work.

Two exhibitions in Sheffield and Manchester showed this first phase of the project, which is now being expanded to include further artists, jewellers and poets.

about the site

This website currently serves as an archive of the original project. Over the next few months the site will be developed to become an online catalogue, a database and the principle means of providing and disseminating information regarding the development of the project and exhibitions. The links on each page have been designed to reflect the way the different groups of participants inter-related with respect to their contributions.
